There’s nothing flashy about Necco Wafers: the paper roll, the familiar pastel colors, and the unassuming little candy discs.

They've always come in the same eight flavors: lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, licorice, and chocolate. They've been pretty much the same for over a century... and we like it that way! 

So why do Necco Wafers have such staying power? 

The answer to that question dates all the way back to 1847! 

Let's take a dive into the history of one of the oldest candies ever made. 

Oliver Chase and the First Candy Machine

The story of Necco Wafers begins with Oliver Chase, a pharmacist from Boston. In 1847, Chase created the first candy machine – or, technically, the first lozenge cutter. It was originally intended for making medicine...but it worked just as well for candy! His invention revolutionized the candy industry. Now treats could be mass produced!

Chase started his own candy company, which would eventually become Necco.  Thus, Necco Wafers were born, marking the start of a sweet journey that would captivate generations.

Necco Wafers Fought in Both World Wars...

Beyond their delicious taste, Necco Wafers gained fame for being super durable. During both World Wars, these sturdy candies became a staple in soldiers' ration kits. Their ability to withstand harsh conditions and long journeys made them the perfect morale-boosting treat for troops on the front lines.

Fun Facts About Necco Wafers

1.  Necco Wafers have been to space! NASA included them in astronaut food kits during space missions in the 1960s due to their lightweight and non-perishable nature. 

2. While the classic pastel colors of Necco Wafers are well-known, the candy has seen various color changes throughout its history. In the 1960s, for example, the wafers briefly sported brighter, more vibrant colors to appeal to the psychedelic aesthetic of the era.

3. Necco Wafers have a dedicated fan base, with some enthusiasts collecting vintage rolls and packaging. When the New England Confectionery Company (Necco) closed its doors in 2018, the news sparked a surge in interest and nostalgia for the candy, leading to increased demand for remaining stocks and collectibles.

Gone...and Back Again!

In 2018, the confectionery world was rocked by the closure of the New England Confectionery Company (Necco), the original manufacturer of Necco Wafers. For fans of the beloved candy, it seemed like the end of an era.

Luckily, the sadness was short-lived! In 2020, The Spangler Candy Company acquired the rights to Necco Wafers and revived production. Thanks to them, we get to keep enjoying one of the all-time best nostalgic treats. 😊
